This collection is a blend of grand and intimate landscapes in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in western Colorado. Black Canyon is a steep walled Gorge carved over the course of millennia by the Gunnison River. Black Canyon is named not because of the color of the rock, but because its steepness makes it difficult for the suns rays to penetrate into the canyon. It’s walls are often shadowed causing its color to appear black. The Painted Wall clif is the epitome of its beautiful striated walls. It brings to mind the immense power of nature.
As a lifelong city dweller, true dark skies is something I’ve rarely seen, but something I find utterly fascinating and enthralling. It makes you feel insignificant. It helps slot everything into perspective. Your problems and concern seem small in the wake of the clockwork of the spinning heavens above. It’s meditative and humbling.

On a late winter morning in February of 2019 I visited an art installation called Gust in Downtown Houston. With my camera in tow I attempted to capture the essence of the work. Gust is an installation by COCOLab, an arts collective from Mexico City. It was installed at Discovery Green in Houston, TX from November 16, 2018 - March 20, 2019 to commemorate 10 years of the park. With its array of colorful swiveling pinwheels, Gust allows you to visualize the wind. You witness its ebb and flow, its persistence and ephemerality.
On a Saturday in mid-August of 2019, my family and I were vacationing on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. We generally flock to the west coast of VI and especially the black rocky coastal towns of Ucluelet and Tofino. I made these photos during a fiery sunset with like minded adventurers.
